Eclipse is one of the most significant developments in integrated development environments (IDEs) in recent history. The ecosystem created by the Eclipse system is such that software developers working in multiple languages and domains can genuinely claim to have a universal development framework. Although, the first and most robust IDE implementation for Eclipse is the Java toolkit, PYTHON can benefit from a strong Python Development Environment (PDE) in Eclipse as well.
In this presentation we survey current efforts to create a comprehensive PDE by the author and others, assess their strengths and weaknesses, and list features that we feel are critical for a complete PDE. We discuss the technical details of creating an Eclipse PDE and demonstrate our work in progress. We show how Python can leverage the popularity and growing dominance of Eclipse to increase the appeal of Python as a programming language for complex systems and invite discussion and participation in this effort toward creating a high quality PDE.
