What Every Open Source Project Should Know About Patents
Jason Schultz, Staff Attorney, Electronic Frontier Foundation
Track: Emerging Topics
Date: Friday, August 5th, 2005
Time: 10:45am - 11:30am
Location: D136
Patent threats are becoming much more of an issue for open source projects. At EFF, we've been exploring various ways to address these threats in conjunction with the folks at PubPat et al. These include legisltive reforms, public prior art database efforts, the EFF Patent Busting Project, and a new idea for a GPL-like Defensive Patent License.
Schultz presents a brief overview of all these issues, along with some quick "top ten" tips for anyone managing an open source project re: patents and what to do about them in order to minimize the risk for their projects and work to proactively attack patent threats as they appear.
