The Art of Fenestration: Porting from POSIX to Windows
Bruce Momjian, Core Team Member, PostgreSQL Project
Track: Linux
Date: Thursday, August 4th, 2005
Time: 1:45pm - 2:30pm
Location: Portland 255
Porting a POSIX-based OSS project to Windows for the first time can seem like a Herculean labor. Yet there are few things that can grow your community as immediately as being available for the most popular desktop platform.
From 2002 to 2004, the PostgreSQL team ported their 500,000 line project while minimizing the impact on POSIX development. Come talk with Bruce Momjian about how they did it. Topics include incremental development, a porting library to centralize port-specific functions, the harnessing of community knowledge to solve difficult poring problems, and techniques used to minimize code complexity when adding the port.
