Session
Apocalypse Now! - Perl 6 Is Here Today
Brian Ingerson, Free Agent, Social Text, Inc.
Track: Perl
Date: Wednesday, August 3rd, 2005
Time: 11:35am - 12:20pm
Location: Portland 251
Autrijus Tang is not only the most prolific Perl module author on the CPAN today, he is now the creator of a working Perl6 interpreter that is also available on CPAN.
Pugs (The Perl User's Golfing System) is an interactive interpreter written in the functional programming language Haskell. Given that Haskell produces very fast compilations, Pugs may turn out to be more than just a proof of concept.
Perl5i is the code name for an attempt to use the Perl 5 internals as a generic virtual machine, somewhat akin to Parrot. The idea is to be able to run other syntaxes over it including (a subset of) Perl 6. The implicit goal is that 100% of current Perl 5 code is guaranteed to work.
Ingerson discusses a new wave of unprecedented development in Perl 6 including Pugs, Perl5i, and new modules written in Perl 6. You've heard about Parrot. You've heard about Ponie. Now find out the latest details on a new underground Perl 6 movement.
