Session
10 Things Every Java Programmer Should Know About Ruby
Jim Weirich, Consultant, Compuware
Track: Ruby
Date: Thursday, August 4th, 2005
Time: 11:35am - 12:20pm
Location: E143-144
A Java Programmer coming to Ruby for the first time will find a language that at first seems very familiar. They will find classes, objects, variables, and all the familiar tools of an object oriented language. A closer examination reveals a language that is subtly different than Java in many respects. Getting past dynamic types is just the first barrier. Closures, internal iterators, duck typing and open classes are all concepts that are little used in Java. Understanding these topics is the difference between writing "Java code in Ruby" and writing idiomatic Ruby. We will look at ten things that a Java programmer should know to help them write better Ruby code.
