Session
The Applicance Architecture: Commodity Hardware + Open Source Software==highly Robust System
Brad Porter, Office of the CTO, Tellme Networks
Track: Emerging Topics
Date: Wednesday, August 3rd, 2005
Time: 11:35am - 12:20pm
Location: E148
What is it that Google, Tellme, AOL, and Yahoo have in common? Each has built a large-scale, heterogeneous, robust system from commodity hardware and open-source software. This revolution hasn't been enabled by more robust code, more robust server software, or more robust hardware. Instead, this has been enabled by more resilient systems architecture.
The advancements in systems architecture have been organic and evolutionary. A consistent set of principles for how and why these systems allow for greater manageability, less downtime, and smoother upgrades has yet to be articulated. In fact, most of these systems still have pain points where it takes hours of planning to perform simple system modifications.
