Mono is an open source, cross-platform implementation of the .NET development framework. It's based on the Common Language Infrastructure (CLI), standardized by the ECMA standards group and ratified as standards by ISO. Similar to Java, the Mono environment consists of a compiler, virtual machine, and API classes. Although .NET supports many languages, Mono's main compiler focus is on the C# language.
This tutorial is for developers who want to get up to speed quickly with Mono. Dumbill and Bornstein lead you through what you can do now with Mono, and provide plenty of jumping-off points for finding out more. Based on the O'Reilly book Mono: A Developer's Notebook, and presented by its authors, the Mono Boot Camp guides you through installation of the Mono tools on three platforms (Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows XP), introduces you to the C# language and its major libraries, and demonstrates some of the Mono-specific libraries that make cross-platform development a reality.
