Over the past few years, the use of web services has grown considerably. The Apache Axis platform has helped thousands of users not only experiment with web services but also build production quality applications that utilize web services. To achieve the complete vision of using web services for application integration and for build SOA, a number of WS-* specifications have been released to support the development of the missing components of the puzzle. The Apache Web Services group has ressponded by quickly providing open source implementations for many of those specifications.
This tutorial begins by describing Apache Axis, which forms the core of a web services solution. It will then cover a number of projects under the Apache Web Services umbrella such as jUDDI, the open source implementation of UDDI; Sandesha, the implementation of the WS-ReliableMessaging protocol and a crucial component of a SOA implementation; and Apolo, an implementation of WSRF which is an open framework for modeling and accessing stateful resources using web services. In addition to describing the functionality provided by each project, the tutorial also discusses the current state of each project and how it can be incorporated with the rest of the components into a full-blown web services platform.
