Session
Don't Drop the SOAP: Why Web Services Require Complexity
Randy Ray, Tellme Networks, Inc.
Track: XML
Date: Thursday, August 4th, 2005
Time: 1:45pm - 2:30pm
Location: E142
There is more than one way to develop a web service, and few agree on the best way. This presentation explains why REST, as useful as it is for certain problems, has real shortcomings that can be overcome with XML-RPC and SOAP. This will be explained and demonstrated with examples of real-world services that require more complexity than REST can offer. The summary will be that all of the technologies have their usefulness, but that developers should not be so quick to shun SOAP or other related technologies.
