BOF
Open Source Technologies for Conservation Non Profits
Track: BOF
Date: Wednesday, August 3rd, 2005
Time: 8:30pm - 9:30pm
Location: E143-144
Moderated by Roberto Cavalcanti
The purpose of this BOF is to discuss how open source tools can help environmental nonprofits collaborate in managing and sharing conservation information to provide better decisions and lessen conflicts over natural resources. It will also discuss how environmental organizations can use the Internet to mobilize support and volunteer work more effectively.
Since the 1990s the number of environmental nonprofit organizations has expanded dramatically. In developing countries these NGOs have been instrumental in bringing together local communities, scientists, governments and the private sector to develop solutions to maintain the natural environments while addressing human needs. Despite their successes, most NGOs do not have processes to leverage the information and skills of an ever-changing community of supporters. How can the methods and tools developed by the open source community help?
