Users often have a difficult time finding information through web-based query interfaces. It's frustrating to have to guess what to type in the empty blanks.

We will demonstrate how to build "friendly" query interfaces that help the user start with partial information and iteratively narrow the search until the number of results is sufficiently small to then browse the results.

Our talk will show designers techniques for building these dynamic query interfaces, including the supporting SQL that is generated behind the scenes.
