Lessons Learned in Taking a Closed Source Product Open

Neelan Choksi, Sr. Director, BEA Systems

Track: Business
Date: Wednesday, July 26
Time: 2:35pm - 3:20pm
Location: D135

In this presentation, Neelan Choksi will discuss the lessons learned during the six months from taking the closed source code base of Kodo and making it available as open source under the project name Open JPA. The announcement to do this was made February 14 and this will be a true case study of what went right and what went wrong during the first six months of this decision. This presentation will be based on real world experiences and efforts that are taking place between now and OSCON.

The anticipated topics include:

    1) overcoming challenges faced in the corporation and among those who do not believe in open source,
    2) building a community around an open source project,
    3) dealing with customers who paid for the closed source version,
    4) technical management challenges of multiple committers,
    5) technology challenges relating to managing patches and competing directions for the project,
    6) working with other open source communities, and
    7) marketing an open source project to industry.
