Over the past few years, open source has profoundly changed the nature of software acquisition, economics, and deployment. Where once CIOs were the gatekeepers and final arbiters of what would and would not be deployed in their shop, free and open source software empowered developers to select the best tools for their job, rather than the products their managers thought were the best tools for the job. With this power, however, comes great responsibility. Now that developers are setting technical agendas rather than working around them, what comes next? How can they make their CIOs more comfortable with the the free and open source software that they're choosing to deploy? How can they ensure that choices the make don't negatively impact the rest of their IT environment? How can they leverage their newfound power and influence most effectively?
