YouTube began as a small PHP application. Within a few weeks, it became obvious that it needed to grow fast.

A Python-powered YouTube emerged and became an unending battle to meet user demand. Repeated tuning and optimization only revealed new bottlenecks as the site continued to devour resources. Over the course of 18 months, a very efficient system was shaped.

This talk will discuss the series of events that prompted the key ideas enabling YouTube to grow.
