The concept of community wireless networking as a peer-to-peer, grassroots-based, broadband access solution will be introduced and reviewed. Schuyler Erle will visit the strengths and weaknesses of off-the-shelf wireless technologies, focusing on 802.11b and WEP, vis a vis the specific problems and needs of community networks. Finally, we will examine the design of a software-based system intended to foster co-operative access to community bandwidth and resources.
