Jonathan Schull

Jonathan Schull, Ph.D.

Founder and President, SoftLock.com, Digital Goods

Dr. Jonathan Schull is the founder of SoftLock.com Inc. (dba Digital Goods), and authored its issued and pending patents on information commerce, superdistribution. A biological psychologist with a longstanding interest in adaptive systems, evolutionary psychology and the spread of information through intelligent networks, Schull gave up a tenured position at Haverford College and his research on animal behavior and cognition in order to advance the idea that digital goods can be virally-marketed and sold in copyright-protected, copy-encouraged, readily-purchased formats.

Schull is an internationally recognized authority on intellectual property protection, information commerce, the new information economy and the nature of intelligence in biological and artificial systems. In addition to having appeared on NBC’s Prime Time Live for work on dolphin cognition, Schull has written numerous articles related to the evolution and spread of adaptive knowledge and behavior, including: “Are Species Intelligent” (Behavioral and Brain Sciences, 1990), “The Uncertain Response in Humans and Animals” (Cognition, 1997), and “William and the World Wide Web,” one of several articles and book chapters he has published about William James, the great American psychologist and philosopher. Schull has received two coveted fellowships from the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Mental Health, followed by an impressive list of more than a dozen other fellowships, grants and awards. He is founder of the General Evolution Research Group, former associate editor of World Futures: the Journal of General Evolution.
