Xen and the Art of Rails Deployment

Ezra Zygmuntowicz,

Date: Saturday, May 19
Time: 1:50pm - 2:40pm
Location: Oregon Ballroom 202

This talk is about the search for the holy grail in Rails deployment. Ezra Zygmuntowicz will discuss how Xen virtualization and scalable rails applications go hand in hand andl outline the optimum setup and infrastructure required to scale hundreds of Rails applications to the moon.

We will discuss the lessons learned in the deployment trenches. What kind of Rails apps are a synch to scale? What kinds are not? We will cover the common pitfalls and how to avoid them as well as little known optimization tactics and when to use them.

Xen has changed the way we think about typical server side applications. With a server architecture based on Xen and tuned for the ruby interpreter, we can truly have on-demand scalability for rails, where the hosting platform becomes a utility like the power company. The future is in elastic computing power.

We will discuss case studies that follow a startup company's Rails application from the incubator to multimillion page views per day and what it took to get them there.
