Session

Building a Video Transcoding System for Ruby on Rails

Jonathan Dahl, Founding Partner, Slantwise Design

Date: Friday, May 18
Time: 1:50pm - 2:40pm
Location: Oregon Ballroom 204

Online video has gone from 0 to 60 in about 12 months. (YouTube is barely a year old.) Huge companies like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Apple are investing heavily in video. Smaller players, startups, and the "Long Tail" are driving much of the innovation.

This talk will discuss video transcoding on a practical level. Imagine that your boss or client asks you to build a site that accepts and plays user-submitted video; what do you need to know?

Along the way, we will look at:

  • Handling uploads
  • Asynchronous processing (including building a rough transcoding farm)
  • Tools, formats, and codecs
  • Legal Issues

And of course, we'll watch some video!
