Solr on Rails

Erik Hatcher, Programmer, Applied Research in Patacriticism - University of Virginia

Date: Sunday, May 20
Time: 1:50pm - 2:40pm
Location: Oregon Ballroom 201

Solr brings Lucene to the limelight, along with LAMP and of course Rails, by providing a simple HTTP interface to the powerful and popular open source Java search engine. Now any environment, from shell scripts to Rails applications, can interact with Lucene easily.

Solr features faceted results, context highlighting, more-like-this searching, and much more. This presentation covers everything needed for a Ruby project to elegantly interact with Solr, including the acts_as_solr plugin. Several specific case studies will be included to show how Solr has been flexibly leveraged, particularly from Hatcher's own work with Collex, a folksonomy-grounded faceted search system built with a Rails front-end.
