Beyond Text: Adding Multimedia to Your Books

Bob Connolly, PDF Pictures
Gary Cosimini, Business Development Director, Creative Solutions Business Unit, Adobe Systems

Date: Monday, June 18
Time: 1:30pm - 5:00pm
Location: Empire Room

Most publishers still make the lion’s share of their revenue from paper-based products and therefore must sustain a workflow grounded in printed production realities. This workshop will provide detailed demonstrations of using the latest publishing and web authoring technologies to take commercial publishing beyond “text and pictures” and print-centric manual-layout paradigms.

This tutorial will be broken into two parts:
1:30-2:45 XML Inside and Out. See hands-on demonstrations of using InDesign/InCopy CS3, XSLT, and other tools to import, process, and export XML-based content. Learn about new features including namespace support, XML Rules, and searching/filtering options, snippets, and XHTML Export with embedded SWF.

After a break,
3:15-5:00 Enhancing Text-based Content with Multimedia and Interactivity. Learn how to produce interactive animated comic books, audio/video text books, software manuals featuring "how to" video, and rich-media magazines that include interactive advertising, via a variety of authoring tools and integrating with content produced in the first segment of the workshop. You will also learn the pros and cons of various rich-media delivery solutions including the new Adobe Digital Editions software, browser-based Flash, and others.
