Session

Commodity Data Center Design

James Hamilton, Architect, Microsoft Windows Live

Track: Web Operations
Date: Tuesday, April 17
Time: 2:40pm - 3:30pm
Location: 2018

As an industry, we’re successfully building robust, internet-scale services upon a fabric of unreliable, low-cost, commodity systems. These servers are unreliable compared to their big system ancestors, yet we house them similarly: in highly redundant and expensive data centers. This talk describes a commoditized data center design using standard shipping containers as the core building block. Advantages include faster data center build-out, improved cooling and power efficiency, floor space matched to available power, rapid adaption to changes in demand and costs, and the ability to move capacity closer to the edge.
