The Garden of the Commons (GotC) web site hopes to enhance community engagement, broaden awareness, and create a greater appreciation of our natural environment by fostering public interaction around local edible flora that exist primarily in public domain areas. The GotC web site provides the public with an accessible means of sharing information over the web about edible plants and trees that exist in public spaces.

    Users can:
  • search for edible plants by providing a common street address and additional options (e.g. plant type=cherry),
  • add edible plants to the site by providing location and plant identification information,
  • add geolocation information to plants registered with only an address.
In the future users will be able to:
  • monitor the status of plants by registering as a "plant watcher,"
  • receive an individualized RSS feed with up-to-date information about the plants on their watch list,
  • receive email notifications (if desired) when a tree or plant they have registered an interest in becomes ripe and ready for harvest,
  • use our forums to discuss anything related to the site and the plants indexed on the site, and even politics,
  • searching by what's ripe now.

In the future GotC hopes to function as a central resource for community horticulture and tree-planting initiatives.
