JPEG 2000 for Geospatial Imaging

Date: Wednesday, June 29
Time: 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Location: Borgia Room

TrackBackTrackBack

The JPEG 2000 ("JP2") standard has the potential to significantly improve (raster) imaging workflows in the GIS arena:

  • improved quality, via new compression algorithms
  • interoperability, via ISO standardization
  • increased performance, esp. for very large images
  • network-tolerance, via client/server streaming protocols

A number of vendors are starting to supply the first pieces of the toolchain, and a lot of customers are starting to ask what all the fuss is about.

    Topics of conversation could include:
  • the emerging GMLJP2 standard from OGC
  • possible support for JP2 in OGC WCS (web coverage server)
  • multispectral support
  • JPIP support for streaming, distributed apps
  • NITF/JP2 issues
  • tools available on the market today
  • tools missing from the market today
  • ???

If you're interested in knowing what JPEG 2000 is, or if you're using it already today, stop by and let's share ideas, lessons, experiences, etc.
