Do all location-based mobile advertising models require a GPS signal and carrier revenue share? Absolutely not, says Scott Dunlap of NearbyNow. There are plenty of business models that work where customers "self-locate," as long it promises a rich user experience. Dunlap will walk us through the concept of "proximity search" -- making a geographic area such as a shopping mall, fully searchable down to every product, brand, or sale -- and how this can prompt users to self-locate with text messaging.
