Date: 03/28/2001
Time: 4:15pm - 5:00pm
Sean Sheedy, a representative from Nextel's Wireless Data Services groups,
will
discuss the experiences and challenges he encountered while designing the
user interface, data entry, and profile/class architecture of some of the
MIDlets
that will ship on Nextel's Java-enabled wireless handsets.
Specifically, Sean will bring to light implementation issues that are not
obvious from the MIDP and CLDC specifications, including
presentation, user interaction, program flow, and the use of a handset as a
computing platform. In addtion, memory utilization, application
management, and the nuances of wireless data communications will also be
covered. UI controls will also be discussed, including the reasons behind
Nextel's decision to favor custom controls over those provided
by the environment, and the costs of doing so. Finally, Mr. Sheedy will
debate the need for important features currently not found in the MID profile
such as floating point math and telephony.
