Carl W. Vilbrandt
Carl W. Vilbrandt. After receiving an MFA in Fine Art/Sculpture, Carl went to work as a manufacturing research engineer in aerospace, where his goal was to implement manufacturing for complex/compound shapes. Becoming heavily involved in 3D CAD and CAM, he started writing his own interfaces to many of the CAD programs to enhance the use of 3D design and was always frustrated by the proprietary nature of the software and the high cost. After 16 years in his own company, Applied 3D, dedicated to creating a base of commonly used computing tools and open source solutions, he joined the University of Aizu, an international computer science university in Japan. There, he has been researching environmentally friendly open source hardware designs that can be built and maintained by anyone, anywhere for low cost.
