Ink Reclaiming Program Salvages Hazardous Waste Ft. Myers, FL -- Waste ink destined for solid hazardous waste disposal, in accordance with the Department of Environmental Protection, is being reclaimed for use in an environmental textile printing project. Planet Ink Project Manager Shari Shifrin outlined "a proprietary reclaiming method on waste plastisol ink for screenprinting on recycled fiber textiles." According to Shifrin, garments consisting of reclaimed cotton and post-consumer polyester (PET) "are gaining popularity. The printing project was developed to complete the recycling loop -- products composed of and printed with what would normally be considered garbage ... remnants and solid hazardous waste." Planet Ink is a printing company focused on creating environmentally-sustainable solutions for the textile printing industry while maintaining social responsibility. A patented organic water-based textile ink line manufactured by Planet Ink complements the reclaimed ink product line. |
Your tote bag is recycled -- Cotton
Cotton accounts for 3% of the world's crops, yet its cultivation consumes 26% of the world's total tonnage of pesticides. Approximately 5.4 pounds of chemicals are sprayed yearly on an acre of cotton. These toxic chemicals can be avoided by recycling the cotton byproduct otherwise wasted during production. Up to 40% of cotton is wasted between the harvesting and manufacturing of garments. Much of this waste becomes solid waste in our ever-expanding landfills. Additionally, we only use recycled ink, an ink-reclaiming program engineered by Planet Ink (see sidebar), to print the event logo on your recycled bag.
Recycled Name Badge Holders
We recycle and reuse name badge holders from conference to conference. Before you leave OSCON on Friday afternoon, drop your name badge and lanyard off at Registration. We'll reuse your badge holder for future conferences; one more way in which we reduce waste from event production.
Other ways we save -- Lunch boxes, napkins, recycling teams
Whenever possible, we choose a venue willing to partner with our Green commitment. Together, we purchase recycled paper boxes for our box-lunch meals and recycled napkins for food functions, and use stainless flatware and glass barware instead of plastics wherever possible. We also pay for the additional staffing necessary to sort and manage the recycling of all materials related to our events.
